How to read this.
- Rolling CAGR annualizes the return for each possible start date over the chosen window. Every point on the line is “if you'd bought on this date and held for N years.”
- Distribution shows how often each return band occurred across all start dates. Wider spread ≡ more sequence risk.
- Min / P25 / Median / P75 / Max summarize that distribution. The worst-case is the return of the unluckiest investor; the median is the middle experience, not the average.
- Short windows (1-3 years) will show dramatic dispersion. Longer windows (10Y+) compress towards the long-run drift of the index.
